From the beginning:
Ava Rose Kelly joined our family on 9/10/2018, and just 8 months later on 5/25/19, she was diagnosed with cancer, Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. After weeks of fighting ear infections in both ears and multiple visits to her pediatrician, her eyes swelled up and we realized something was wrong. We immediately went to the ER and went through a gamut of scans and tests where the ER doctors returned the worst news imaginable. After her CT scan doctors confirmed that Ava had masses in her brain and further scans showed masses all over her body.
She is now several months into her fight against this cancer. Her little body has withstood four rounds of chemotherapy treatments with four more on the horizon. Ava still has a tough road ahead to full recovery with these upcoming rounds, surgery to remove the primary mass, then years of followup appointments. Despite undergoing intense therapy, several infections, and many blood/platelet transfusions Ava’s spirit has not broken. She continues to shine even with impaired vision from her tumor. We love her so much and she always brings a smile to whomever she encounters.
End of the year update:
The end of the year continued to keep us on our toes with our sweet baby girl. Shortly after Ava finished her 8th and last planned chemo of her initial treatment plan, she came down with her third line infection and we landed back in the hospital. She had surgery to remove her infected line in the beginning of December and just a week later completed her scan to determine our next steps.
Although we hoped for a clean scan, Ava still had uptake in her primary tumor and she went in for surgery just three days later for removal of the remaining mass. The surgery went very well and although we planned to be in the hospital on Christmas, Ava amazed us with her quick recovery and we were able to spend Christmas together at home resting.
Ava’s tumor is now being further studied at CHLA to try to find out more information since she had an unusual case and a mutation that has been seen in less then 2% of kids with neuroblastoma. We are anxious for results but so thankful that we are fortunate enough to have access to the kind of care Ava continues to receive.
We could not have made it through this year without the support of our friends and family and we continue to feel hopeful that our spunky little girl with have a healthy 2020.
Please help Ava continue to fight her battle against Neuroblastoma! We want to thank every for the continued support, love, and prayers.
